Gamaliel Grootenboer nació el 4 de enero de 1986 en San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, México, dónde creció y vivió hasta los 15 años. Hijo de madre mexicana dedicada a la investigación y padre mexicano-holandés escultor, pintor y arquitecto. Rodeado de un panorama pluricultural de indignas, extranjeros y locales, desde pequeño descubrió el rico y artístico alrededor que consolido la basé de su formación artística. Entre la imaginación de su padre, el conocimiento e ingenio de su madre, la variedad de personajes académicos y artísticos del poblado y la particularidad de ser hijo único y zurdo, Gamaliel desarrollo un fuerte apetito por la estética, los cuentos y las invenciones.

A los 16 años comenzó a vivir en Xalapa, Veracruz y después pasó unos meses en Calgary, Canadá. Estudió Comunicación en el ITESO en Guadalajara. Años en los que comenzó a producir fotografías, dirigió un cortometraje y un pequeño documental. Terminada la carrera pasó unos meses en Ámsterdam y París, incursionando en la fotografía espontánea de gente en la calle.

En los últimos años ha vivido en la Ciudad de México, Zipolite y San Cristóbal. En la capital cursó una maestría de la UNAM/ENAP en Diseño y Comunicación Visual, y participó durante el 2012 en el Consejo Editorial de la sección de moda del periódico Reforma. Entre el 2014 y 2016 expuso su obra en una gira nacional auspiciada por la Alianza Francesa, luego en Bogotá Colombia expuso “Miradas al legado de Benito Juárez”. En el 2019 prestó la muestra fotográfica “Cuentos y Narcisismo” en la Ciudad de México, en la Casa de Cultura Emilio Carballido, y en el 2021 inauguró “Oniris”, una exposición que mezcló la fotografía impresa con la tecnología de realidad aumentada.

Gamaliel Grootenboer was born on January 4, in 1986, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, where he grew up and lived until he was 15 years old. Son of a Mexican mother dedicated to research and a Mexican-Dutch father, sculptor, painter and architect. Surrounded by a multicultural panorama of indigenous people, foreigners and locals, from a young age he discovered the rich and artistic surroundings that consolidated the base of his artistic training. Between the imagination of his father, the knowledge and wit of his mother, the variety of academic and artistic characters in the town, and the peculiarity of being an only child and left-handed, Gamaliel developed a strong appetite for aesthetics, stories and inventions.

At age 16, he began living in Xalapa, Veracruz, and later spent a few months in Calgary, Canada. He studied Communication at ITESO in Guadalajara. Years in which he began to produce photographs, directed a short film and made a small documentary. After finishing his degree, he spent a few months in Amsterdam and Paris, venturing into spontaneous photography of people in the street.

In recent years he has lived in Mexico City, Zipolite, San Cristóbal and Guadalajara. In the Mexican capital, he completed a master's degree from UNAM / ENAP in Design and Visual Communication, and participated in 2012 in the Editorial Board of the fashion section of the newspaper Reforma. Between 2014 and 2016 he exhibited his work on a national tour sponsored by the French Alliance, then in Bogotá Colombia he exhibited "Looks at the legacy of Benito Juárez." In 2019 he presented the photography exhibition "Tales and Narcissism" in Mexico City, at the Emilio Carballido House of Culture, and in 2021 he launched "Oniris", an exhibition that mixed printed photography with augmented reality technology.
